I just looked at my neglected blog and noticed I haven't blogged since August..oops. I've been busy! I started school in August and after a week..I changed my major. Nursing wasn't for me, it just simply wasn't. I guess I started out with this "I love to help people" attitude and didn't think about it long term. I don't want to work nights, weekends, 12 hour shifts and fight people for holidays off. I'm a single mother and that just doesn't work for me. Karsen comes first. The nursing program kept changing their rules, pre-reqs and test requirements and their constant changes were honking me off. FYI, "honking" is my new word. The nursing program at Ivy Tech is one of the hardest around, I've heard it over and over. They only take 30 students into the program and last time around there were 217 that applied. Whip out your calculators and do the math...I had approximately a 14% chance of getting in the program. Those aren't good odds. I didn't want to take the risk of taking 1.5 years of pre-req classes and then not get into the program, then what would I do? Option A was to try again the next semester, option B was to try for LPN instead of RN or Option C was to start all over...umm aren't I already doing option C? Oh and Option B doesn't count because for the spring semester they aren't taking any LPN students so most students' back-up plan is taken away. They also took away the 3 extra points that local students were going to get for living in one of the surrounding counties where the school is located. They told us we got 3 points for this..and then literally 6 weeks later they took those points away. There is a test called the TEAS test that is like the SAT test that everyone has to take to get into nursing. Students use to be able to take this test 3 times, they changed it to 2 times and you have to have 30 days between testing and those scores are good for 2 years. They also changed the test to a harder version 5, which included more math and less English. BOO!
Anyway, my heart wasn't in it and it's not for me. At least I figured it out now. I have changed my major to paralegal studies. I've always been interested in law and I was a paralegal (or at least did the job of one) for 5 years previously. I'll be done in the fall of 2012. I'll still make good money, and won't have to work nights or weekends or holidays! I still want to pursue a photography business so I'm in a photo class right now and hope to advance my skills.
Soo..I'm only taking 2 classes right now, photography and chemistry. I need a general science class for my paralegal degree, but I was already in chem for nursing so I kept it. I'll be back to a full time student in the Spring.
