Extreme Yard Makeover

Ugh. Where is Ty Pennington when we need him? Yesterday Shaun and his friends started our extreme yard makeover. What a project! We've lived in our house for 9 years now. The yard has been "ok" until about a year ago. We started noticing that our yard was sinking and we had a huge ditch forming across the entire length of our yard. It was also in part of the neighbors' yards on each side of us. Well, when Shaun dug holes to put our fence in he noticed that he was digging up mulch. MULCH! He dug a big hole to investigate and found that we had about a foot of mulch burried under our yard. It was starting to rot and hence our yard was sinking as the mulch rotted. We determined that the LAZY development company mulched up the trees that were on our property prior to our neighborhood being built and instead of properly dumping the mulch, they just buried it in our yard instead. The only way to fix our yard was to dig up the areas that had mulch underneath. After talking to our neighbors they were ticked off about it too. Talking to the developers about it would be like spitting in the wind so why even bother going after them. They knew when they did it that there wouldn't be any ramifications.

So longer story short....a huge portion of our yard was dug up and good portions of our neighbors' yards were dug up too. Once it was dug up they discovered that the mulch was moldy! Shaun and his buds had to haul away all the dirt/mulch/mold and dump it and then haul back in truck load after truck load of new dirt. It would have been much easier to get a dump truck (a Mack one of course) of dirt, but we couldn't bring it into the subdivision or on our driveway because it would be too heavy. They had to use some rinky dink little truck that didn't hold much dirt and make a billion trips. They worked from 9am-9pm today and the whole day yesterday and they still aren't done. We need several more truck loads of dirt to fill the yard and then some nice crushed dirt to top it off so we can grow grass. There was a nice big round hole in the backyard that was screaming to have a pool put in it, but that idea didn't get very far. I also thought of just filling in the ditch with water and calling it a moat, but that also didn't pan out.

Here are pictures of the disaster:

Wow...that sucks! Our house used to be a model home, and when they dug up the little sidewalk in our front yard, they left all of the gravel. Then they tried to plant grass on it. Duh, it didn't grow. Joe had a fun time digging all that out, but it was only 4 feet wide and six inches thick...not nearly the moat you dug out!
